Materials handling requires certain supplies, and when you are handling materials in a cleanroom, those supplies need to be static-free and free of containments. These things are done in a cleanroom because the materials need to be kept clear of dirt, dust, particles, and other small particles. Cleanrooms do not have to be completely clean, of course. Usually cleanrooms refer to rooms that have a controlled number of particles for every square foot of atmosphere. These so-called cleanrooms are often much larger than any room. They can be thousands of square feet and include entire manufacturing areas. These rooms need to be kept clean for the delicate work that happens within those cleanrooms and laboratories.
An important part of materials handling is safety. For example, you have to wear special shoes or special shoe covers. The soles of these shoes or shoe covers are smooth and without traction. They need to be smooth to minimize static electricity, which in turn minimizes the amount of particles clinging to the shoes and to the bottom of your pants. But unfortunately, these shoes are also a bit dangerous because they are slick and you won’t have any traction against the cleanroom’s slick floor. You should always follow stated rules for materials handling in order to maximize safety and keep you and the product safe.
